Modified Type 1 axles that are an Inch shorter.  A friend was in town and wanted to go for a spin in the Ghia, in a mad panic I put it back together and went for a spin around the block.  Pulling back into the drive the first axle snapped, I had no clue what broke, so the engine came back out thinking the throw out bearing had slipped.  Not until I put an old clutch on the yoke and turned it did I see the small crack on one end of the axle just outside the boot.  This was repaired and thought to be a fluke, but the other side soon followed.  It was also repaired, but did not last.  So she sits....while I dump money into the Jetta.

Drivers side axle broke Aug. 25 on second test run of 2 ltr.  One week after first repair passenger side broke  Sept. 8, 1999 out of the tire shop parking lot.

And even another one(3) Oct. 3 after finally getting the Webers dialed in and taking a friend for a thrill Ride to be cut short !

The repair weld done by me.  This was done to both ends.   The old weld was ground back and then rewelded with a deeper wider weld.  Not the prettiest weld in the world, but will keep me on the road for now.
